Reading Achievement Level Results for the Nation's Fourth-Graders

  • The percentage of students at or above Proficient increased from 29 percent in 1992 to 32 percent in 2000.
  • The percentage of students at Advanced increased from 6 percent in 1992 to 8 percent in 2000.
NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board. The three levels for each grade are: Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the reading achievement levels.
