Collapse Data Categories

Slide 1

View Results page in Advanced mode for the query Grade 4, Mathematics, Number of students in Class, jurisdictions Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and year 2003. The table is collapsed to results for Colorado and a defined group, 'Peer states'.

Description:

This slide displays an animation of the View Results page in Advanced mode. A table is shown for the query Grade 4, Mathematics, Number of students in Class, jurisdictions Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and year 2003. An animation follows that simulates the table collapsing to results for Colorado and a defined group, "Peer states".

Narration:

You can combine or "collapse" jurisdictions and data categories, depending on the nature of the query. This can be used to simplify tables.

Slide 2

This slide shows the Format Table page in Advanced Mode. The cursor is clicking the collapse icon at the top of the Jurisdiction column.

In the Select Collapse Options popup window the checkboxes for Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming are checked and the words 'Peer states' are typed in the 'Name for new category' text input field.

This slide displays an animation illustrating Collapse Data Categories from the Format Table page. The cursor moves to click the collapse icon atop the table's Jurisdiction column. In the Select Collapse Options popup window the cursor moves to select checkboxes for Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Then the cursor moves to the "Name for new category" text input field and enters "Peer states". The cursor next moves to click the "Collapse and Remove Selections" button. The Collapse Jurisdiction panel updates to remove all selected jurisdictions and replace them with a new category, "Peer states". Finally the cursor moves to click the Update Table button. The popup window disappears and the table updates to a collapsed data view.

Narration:

To combine categories, click the icon atop the column of data. In the popup form, mark the checkboxes of all categories you want to combine. Write a name for the new category. Click "Collapse and Remove Selections". Finally, click "Update Table".

Checkboxes are selected for all states except Colorado and "Peer states" is entered in the "Name for new category" field. The cursor moves to click the "Collapse and Keep Selections" button. The Collapse Jurisdiction panel updates to include a new category, "Peer states". Finally the cursor moves to click the Update Table button. The popup window disappears and the table updates to a collapsed data view.

Narration:

Alternatively, the query may let you keep collapsed categories in the table. By clicking "Collapse and Keep Selections", all categories remain in the table.
