This slide displays an Advanced Mode Select Criteria screen in the background and the Variables list box and Search Controls boxes zoom out in enlarged view. The Variables list box is highlighted in conjunction with audio, and then the Search Controls.

Narration:

There are thousands of variables in the full NAEP Data Explorer database in Advanced Mode. To search through them more easily, you can force the list box to display only certain kinds of variables. This is done through the Search Controls, which stands directly underneath the Variables list box in Advanced Mode.

Slide 2

This slide displays an Advanced Mode Select Criteria screen and the Variables Listbox and Search Controls with the latter zoomed out in enlarged view. The three radio button options in the Search Controls box are highlighted.

A subsequent view after 'all variables' has been selected and 'Gender' is now available and selected.

The cursor moves to select "all variables". The list of varibles in the Variables list box expands to now include Gender, which is now selected.

Narration:

Two search controls—"selected variables" and "search results"—can hide variables and prevent their selection. Remember to select "all variables" in order to select from the full range of variables.
