SOURCE: National Center for Education Statistics, National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 1990, 1992, 1996, and 2000 Mathematics Assessments.

Major Findings

  • In 2000, white students had higher scores, on average, than black or Hispanic students.
  • Although white, black, and Hispanic students at grades four and eight made gains since 1990, the large gaps between these subgroups' performance have remained relatively unchanged.

See national mathematics achievement-level results by race/ethnicity for grade 4, grade 8, and grade 12.
