Major Findings

  • The percentage of twelfth-graders at or above Proficient increased from 12 percent in 1990
    to 17 percent in 2000.
  • The percentage of twelfth-graders at or above Basic increased from 58 percent in 1990
    to 65 percent in 2000.

* NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board. The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the mathematics achievement levels.
