Major Findings

  • At grades 4 and 8, a moderate amount of homework time--15 and 45 minutes depending on grade level--is associated with a higher average score on NAEP. Fourth-graders who spent an hour or more on homework had lower scores than their peers who did not do homework.
  • At grade 12, however, there was no statistically significant difference in the performance of students spending any time between 15 minutes and one hour or more on mathematics homework. Twelfth-graders who reported spending no time on homework had lower scores than their peers who did homework.
