NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the geography achievement levels.
Percentages within each geography achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Findings

  • At grade 8, White students showed an increase since 1994 in the percentages at or above Basic.

  • There were higher percentages of White students and Asian/Pacific Islander students at or above the Basic and Proficient levels than Black and Hispanic students.
