NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). The three levels for each grade are Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. See more information about the geography achievement levels.
Percentages within each geography achievement-level range may not add to 100, or to the exact percentages at or above achievement levels, due to rounding.
Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Findings

  • At grade 8, there was no statistically significant change in the percentage of male or female students at or above the Basic and Proficient achievement levels since 1994.

  • At grade 8 in 2001, there was a higher percentage of male students at or above Proficient and at Advanced than female students.
