NOTE: NAEP reports assessment results in terms of student performance standards called "achievement levels," which are set by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB). Results are based on administration procedures that did not permit accommodations.

Major Findings

• At grade 4, there was no statistically significant change in the percentage of male or female students at or above the Basic and Proficient achievement levels since 1994.
  
  
• At grade 4 in 2001, there was a higher percentage of male students at or above Proficient and at Advanced than female students.
