Jurisdictions

To explore Main NAEP Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing, consider all the Jurisdictions under Groups: National, State, District, Territory/Other, and Region. Results for states, and since 2002 for selected urban districts, are available only for these assessments.

For Civics, Economics, Geography, Music, U.S. History, and Visual Arts, the only group available is National. National includes students from public and private schools, public schools only, and private schools only (where sample sizes are large enough).

In national-only assessments (Civics, Economics, Geography, Music, U.S. History, and Visual Arts) and grade 12 assessments for the other four subjects, Jurisdictions are limited to National (public and private), National Public, National Private (where sample sizes are large enough).

For grade 12 of the above subjects along with Civics, Economics, Geography, Music, U.S. History, and Visual Arts, the only group available is National. National jurisdictions include National (including both public and nonpublic schools), National Public only, National Private only, and Private Only -- where sample sizes are large enough.

When in Main NAEP, see the footnote, “1 Accommodations were not permitted for this assessment for certain years.” This refers to assessments from 1990 to 1996 that were developed based on frameworks that did not allow testing accommodations for students with special needs. Beginning in 1996, NAEP studied adding accommodations using a split sample (with and without accommodations for students), and determined that new trend lines for assessments allowing accommodations could be linked to past results that did not permit accommodations. When in Long-Term Trend (LTT) NAEP, see the footnote, “1 Original assessment format.” This relates to a bridge study performed in 2004 to introduce new procedures. Search for “bridge study” on this website.
