Fourth-graders who reported having more types of reading materials in their homes (books, magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedia) had higher reading scores than students with fewer types.
The percentage of fourth-graders who said they had all four types of reading materials in their homes declined between 1994 and 2000.
The NAEP 2000 reading assessment included background questions that asked students about their reading experiences at home and at school. While findings may suggest a positive or negative relationship between performance on the reading assessment and certain activities, it is important to remember that such relationships are not necessarily causal--there are many diverse factors that play a role in reading ability.
