Reading For Fun--Grade 4
- Fourth-graders who reported reading for fun daily scored higher than their peers who reported less frequent reading for fun.
- There was no statistically significant change between 1992 and 2000 in the percentage of fourth-graders reading for fun daily.
- The percentage of students who never or hardly ever read for fun increased between 1994 and 2000.
| The NAEP 2000 reading assessment included background questions that asked students about their reading experiences at home and at school. While findings may suggest a positive or negative relationship between performance on the reading assessment and certain activities, it is important to remember that such relationships are not necessarily causal--there are many diverse factors that play a role in reading ability. |
