Framework

The 2003 NAAL Framework is the foundation upon which the NAAL study is designed. It specifies and explains the three types of literacy that NAAL measures—prose, document, and quantitative. Based on these literacy types, the framework describes the kinds of prose, document, and quantitative tasks adults perform in their daily lives, as well as the literacy skills adults need in order to perform these tasks. The framework also discusses characteristics that influence the ease or difficulty of a NAAL assessment question.
