Changes to IPEDS Data Collection, 2006-07

Institutional Characteristics:

Part B, Organization: IPEDS will collect early estimates of fall enrollment, for full-time and part-time undergraduate students, first-time undergraduate students, graduate students, and first-professional students (8 numbers total). These data are optional in 2006-07, mandatory in 2007-08.

  • Early estimates of fall enrollment: R=reported; CV=calculated value

  • Level of student Full-time Part-time Total
    Undergraduate R R CV
    First-time undergraduate R R CV
    Graduate R R CV
    First-professional R R CV
Grand total estimated fall 2006 enrollment CV

  • These data will be clearly identified as early estimates, so they may differ from what will be reported on the Enrollment component in the Winter/Spring.
  • The data will be used to generate estimates by state, region, level and control of institution, and level and status of enrollment. They will be available in the IPEDS Peer Analysis System but not on the IPEDS College Opportunities Online (COOL) website.

Part B, Organization: A field capturing self-identified affiliation with an institutional system or corporate entity will be moved from the Finance component so that the information can be provided by private institutions as well as public institutions. This item will be used in a project to aggregate institutional data to the system or corporate level for peer analysis.

Part D, Student Charges: Institutions that report price of attendance data by program will now be able to report program measurement units in credit hours or contact hours. These data will be included on IPEDS COOL.

Part D, Student Charges: Institutions that report price of attendance data by program will also now be able to report the average number of months it takes a full-time student to complete each program reported. These data will be included on IPEDS COOL. These data are optional in 2006-07, mandatory in 2007-08.

Human Resources:

Part names within this component will be reassigned to eliminate duplicates created when the three sections were merged last year.

Salaries section: For 4-year degree-granting institutions, faculty status of instructional staff will be added back. These data will be collected separately by contract length/teaching period (9/10-month, 11/12-month) and by gender. These data are optional in 2006-07, mandatory in 2007-08.

  • Faculty status of instructional staff: R=reported; CV=calculated value

Fall Staff section: Institutions with fewer than 15 full-time employees will be required to submit employee counts by primary occupational activity, by race/ethnicity and gender, in years that Fall Staff is mandatory. Therefore, this requirement will be optional in 2006-07 and mandatory in 2007-08.

Enrollment:

Part A, Fall Enrollment: For degree-granting institutions only, the collection of fall counts will be expanded to include the number of students that transfer into the institution. A new column on the full-time and part-time undergraduate pages will collect the number of degree/certificate-seeking students who are first-time students at the institution, but not first-time in postsecondary education.
