The Academic Libraries Survey (ALS), formerly conducted by the Census Bureau, has now been integrated into the IPEDS 2014-15 Spring Collection. All libraries serving degree-granting, Title IV postsecondary institutions in the U.S. and other jurisdictions are required to report information. The resources available in the information center provide guidance on the integration process and supplementary instructions for completing the new IPEDS Academic Libraries (AL) component.
Because the 2014-15 collection cycle will be the first where the former ALS will be integrated into IPEDS, the registration process will differ. Contact information for previous ALS respondents (now called Academic Libraries contact) and library directors have been loaded into the IPEDS Data Collection System, where possible. Keyholders and coordinators are encouraged to reach out to the preloaded contacts to verify that they will assist with the AL component again and to update the information for the Academic Libraries Contact, as future correspondences will be communicated with this person. Academic Libraries Director contact information was only loaded for reference and does NOT need to be updated, unless coordinators and keyholders wish to identify an additional person to receive AL communications from IPEDS. Where contacts are not listed, keyholders and coordinators are encouraged to determine who will be submitting AL, and to enter their contact information into the Data Collection System so that we can include these folks in our communications. Additionally, eligibility for the AL is determined using a question about library expenditures in the IPEDS IC Header, which also opens during the registration period. Only libraries with expenditures greater than $0 will be asked to complete the AL component. Keyholders and coordinators are encouraged to reach out to AL contacts or library directors to determine this information.
