Any type of compensation: 1) provided in a form other than direct wages; and 2) established by or paid for in part, in kind, or completely by the employer or a third party (e.g., the government, a labor union, an insurance company, or a health maintenance organization). Benefits may or may not be required by law. These include employer contributions to Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, worker's compensation insurance, health insurance, and retirement funds.
