Software Module for California’s Standardized LEA Program Financial Reports

The California Department of Education (CDE) was granted funding for the development of a software module for use by LEAs and CDE staff. The software would rely on California’s new standardized account structure (SACS) and would be used for reporting, collecting, and analyzing financial data for discrete state and federally funded programs. This program is expected to consolidate a variety of reports and dramatically reduce reliance on paper report submission.

The software would complement existing financial information collection, which was written in Visual basic. Development of this software would also involve extensive data cross-walking from technical accounting terminology to layperson accounting terminology. The main activities of this project included:

  • Revisiting and analyzing federal reporting requirements for F-33 and NPFES
  • Refining software requirements
  • Defining technical edits in the federal reporting context
  • Designing desired outputs
  • Coding software to specifications
  • Testing software
  • Releasing software
