Working during the school year is the norm, even for full-time students. In 19992000, 76 percent of all full-time dependent students worked while enrolled (including students with work-study jobs). Those who worked put in an average of 22 hours per week and earned an average of $5,100, including hours and earnings from work-study programs. At each institution type, no difference was detected between the percentages of low-income and middle-income students who worked, the amount they worked, and the average amount they earned.
