\1\Public elementary and secondary education are state estimates. \2\Includes enrollments in local public school systems and in most private schools (religiously affiliated and nonsectarian). Excludes home-schooled children. Based on the National Household Education Survey, the home-schooled children numbered approximately 850,000 in the spring of 1999. Excludes preprimary pupils in schools that do not offer first grade or above. \3\Estimated. \4\Includes kindergarten and some nursery school pupils. \5\Enrollment for 1996 and later years are for degree-granting institutions. All other years, are for institutions of higher education. NOTE: Degree-granting enrollment projections are based on the middle alternative projections published by the National Center for Education Statistics. Data for degree-granting institutions for 1999 imputed using alternative procedures. (See Guide to Sources for details.) Detail may not sum to totals due to rounding. Some data have been revised from previously published figures.
