August 29, 2007 - Health Literacy of America's Adults: Results of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) 2003

View Dr. Sheida White, NAAL Project Officer in a panel discussion on the NAAL health literacy findings. The results are based on assessment tasks designed specifically to measure the health literacy of adults living in the United States. Health literacy was reported using four performance levels: Below Basic, Basic, Intermediate, and Proficient. The majority of adults (53 percent) had Intermediate health literacy. About 22 percent had Basic and 14 percent had Below Basic health literacy. Relationships between health literacy and background variables (such as educational attainment, age, race/ethnicity, where adults get information about health issues, and health insurance coverage) were also examined and reported.

August 15, 2006 - Adults with Basic and Below Basic Literacy Levels: Findings from NAAL

View Dr. Sheida White, NAAL Project Officer in a panel presentation on the NAAL findings in a National Institute for Literacy-sponsored webcast. Dr. White’s presentation focused on demographic and other variables of American adults with Below Basic and Basic literacy. Other panelists, John Strucker of the National Center for the Study of Adult Literacy and Learning (NCSALL) and Brian Bosworth of FutureWorks, discussed practical implications of the NAAL findings on workforce programs and programs that serve adults with Below Basic and Basic literacy.

December 15, 2006 - National Assessment of Adult Literacy- Press Conference Webcast

Originally presented on December 15, 2005, this webcast features the first national findings on the assessment of adult literacy since 1992. Russ Whitehurst, Director of IES, and Mark Schneider, NCES Commissioner, presented the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) results and responded to questions from the media.

The NAAL Health Literacy Component is the first national assessment designed specifically to measure health literacy.
